A security lock and shieldWhat Californians Should Know About Current Scams

published in Security

Fraud continues to affect people across the country, but several schemes targeting Californians are on the rise, and we want to help you stay informed and protected. Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, especially with scams through texts, emails, and phone calls. Below are several trends we’re seeing right now and steps you can take to safeguard your personal and financial information.

Tax Season Scams

We’re in the midst of tax season and scammers are out there impersonating the IRS and state tax agencies. They reach out claiming you owe back taxes or asking you to verify personal information. Their messages may threaten legal action or promise a tax refund to lure you into clicking a link or sharing sensitive data.

Remember: government agencies will not contact you by text or email to demand immediate payment or request personal information.

FasTrak Text Scams

California officials have reported a surge in fraudulent text messages claiming drivers owe FasTrak toll charges. These texts often include a link to a fake website designed to steal your payment information. According to the California Attorney General, these scams are widespread and intentionally mimic official notices. FasTrak has confirmed it does not request payment by text message with a link to a website.

Utility Scams

Scammers may pose as representatives from your local utility provider, claiming your service will be disconnected unless you make an immediate payment. These messages can appear urgent and convincing, but remember, utility companies do not demand instant payment through text messages, gift cards, or payment apps.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited text messages or emails.

  • Verify the sender by contacting the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website.

  • Never share your banking credentials, one-time passcodes, or personal information with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

  • Monitor your accounts regularly for suspicious activity.
